Karnobat
Karnobat is a town southeast of Bulgaria. It is situated on 50 km from Bourgas and it is on an equal distance from Sliven and Yambol. The city is the administrative centre of municipality of Karnobat. There is the institute of agricultural.Since december 2004 the city is 47th most populous place in Bulgaria.
Karnobat is located on 50 km from Bourgas. Throughout the city passes the main road Sofia - Bourgas. Here is also the turnout to Shumen.In Karnobat is one of the biggest railway stations in Bulgaria, which is a railway junction which connects south and North Bulgaria.
Historical evidence shows that since XVth century the city has always been the administrative centre, bussiness and commercial centre with a traditional yearly fair. In travel notes our town has been mentioned under different names - Karinovasa, Karinabad, Karnova and etc. During the Renaissance Karnobat became unifying centre of culture and educational development of the area. The city has a significant contribution in the church struggles during the Renaissance - in the mid 60ies of the XIX century bright Karnobat citizens expelled Anhialo bishop, which finally removed the Greek influence.During the Russian - turkish war in 1877-1878, the region became a victim of Circassians and Bashi bouzitzi.Liberation of Karnobat was on 24th January, which opened the way for major socio-economic transformations. Markeli - the medieval town of stamps, more known as Izvorovo was discovered in VII - IX century and it is located on 7.6km west from Karnobat. In the second half of VIIIth century and the beginning of IXth century Markeli takes place in Bulgarian - Byzantine political and military relations.Here on 20th july 792 the Bulgarian Khan Kardam has a deceive battle and war against the Byzantine imperor Constantine VI. By the second half of VIIIth century Markeli is an important episcopal centre.After the successful for Bulgaria war under Khan Krum's quidance Markeli is converted into the largest old mountain. There are spectacular earth strucutres (trenches and shafts), which today are the best preserved and most spectacular on the Balkan peninsula.
The church St.John the Evangelist was build on the place burned by the turks on 1st january 1878. It is built after 1878 by Triavnian master Gencho Kanev.Its' impressive by its architectural elements and road-carved iconostasis, which is one of the masterpieces of the master of the Debar school.
